EVENTS...
The artist for September will be Dan Gerdeman, and his show will be entitled "Stuck in my Head: Imprints and Other Delights" All work will be inspired by song lyrics, tunes, or passages that get stuck in your head. Here is a brief bio and artist statement:
Dan Gerdeman is the founding member of the Cowtown Lowbrow Collective in Columbus, Ohio. He teaches drawing and painting at Hilliard Davidson High School and art workshops at the Wexner Center for the Arts and The Columbus Museum of Art. Gerdeman works primarily as a painter but also delves regularly in video, printmaking, and animation. He is most interested in illustrating humans in their most petty and profound moments. He is a hopeful artist, father of three, and devoted husband.

Artist's Statement for "Stuck in my Head: Imprints and other Delights."
The Imprint Series began in 2003 as a reaction to a common occurence. A song or lyric gets stuck in your head. It doesn't leave. It is a mantra. Sometimes for minutes. Sometimes for hours. Sometimes a day. It may come from the radio or t.v. or someone singing it. It might just appear. It's okay. You can admit it. It's finally alright to fess up that once upon a time you listened to the music of your parents, brothers, sisters, or friends. You can relinquish that every once in a while, out of nowhere, you hum John Denver, Neil Diamond, or Olivia Newton-John(You younger folks might be humming Poison, Fatboy Slim, M.C. Hammer or the likes). You can go back to your childhood and find funny things that stick like glue to your psyche. Like the time for three weeks that the only thing your(my) mom played on the record player was Barry Manilow's greatest hits. Now, still finding your(my)self humming "Mandy," "I write the songs," and "Ready to take the chance again." It doesn't matter how many punk, bluegrass, or hardcore albums you(i) listen to, the imprint is imprinted.

You live, you grow, you shun your youth and childhood influences. Then, you realize they(your experiences) are your fabric. Without them, you are simply thread.

These are imprints from my childhood, formative years, and adulthood. I will create commissions for your "imprints" on request.

We are also participating in an innovative bike share program called Everyone Bikes. The idea is this: You need a bike, so you rent one from one of the various Short North participating retailers (WTR?!, Tigertree, Milk Bar, etc) You ride it to do errands, shop, etc, and you return it to the rented location two hours later. It is FREE to rent the bike (of course you need to fill out a contract with your credit card and drivers license info) for a two hour time frame.
Ads are placed on the bike basket to offset the cost of the program. This is a great idea to encourage biking and to promote a sense of community. The store gets to advertise wherever the bike rider goes, and the rider gets to use a green form of transportation for free. It's a win-win for everybody.
The bikes used are the Africa BIke from Kona, courtesy of Paradise Garage. For every bike purchased, one is given to an aide worker in Africa. So if you need a bicycle, come down to the Short North and use one!! For more information on this program go to www.everyonebikes.org
